ROCK FALL KILLS MINER AT LUBAMBE
A miner at Lubambe Copper Mine in Chililabombwe on the Copperbelt has died after a rock fell on him.
Lubambe Copper Mines Communications manager Loyce Saili has confirmed and named the miner as Elijah Maseka 34, of Konkola Township.
She said Maseka died after the rock fell on him.
Saili said an accident happened underground at the Lubambe Copper Mine which tragically resulted in the death of an employee.
She said no other employees were injured.
"The Mine management has suspended all production activities underground except for critical tasks like water pumping and ventilation,” Saili said.
"Investigations by the Mine Safety Department are underway to establish the cause of the accident. The mine management, staff and employees offer the family their deepest condolences and will be supporting the family in this time of great tragedy.”
Copperbelt Deputy Commissioner of Police Bothwell Namuswa said Maseka, a Long Hole Rig Operator at Lubambe died around 22:05 hrs.
He said the accident happened at 3352 feet level at W Rab 2.
