FRA to buy maize at k280 per 50kg
Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has announced that it will this year buy be buying maize at k280 per 50kg and paddy rice at k200 per 40kg bag.
FRA Chairperson Kelvin Hambwezya explained during this year’s opening of the crop market season that the new price entails that there has been an increase of K100 as compared to last year.
Hambwezya said the price is cost reflective adding that it reflects the happenings in the regional market.
He added that millers are allowed to buy the product at their own prices.
“We are very sure that the price we are announcing today for maize is cost reflective. Please note that other players in the sector are urged to buy these crops... In setting these prices, the Agency, famers will be provided with a readily available market access closer to their localities through the 1200 deports,” he said.
“Famers will get a reward for their labor which entails more money in their pockets and there will be stimulation and growth of rural economists for farmers as local service providers such as transporters.”
Meanwhile, Hambwezya said FRA will not buy any soya beans this year as the agency still has in abundance.
“We are not buying soya beans this year because we are sitting on a huge stock of soya beans as FRA,” he said.
He however appealed to the government not to open up boarders for the export of maize.
Hambwezya said government should instead allow millers to export their mealie meal.
