Katuta takes a walk of shame for disrespect in Parliament
Chienge Member of Parliament Given Katuta has been suspended for seven days for disrespecting Speaker of the National Assembly and Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Charles Milupi.
On 14th last month when the House was considering the ministerial statement by Milupi on the state of roads in North-Western Province, katombola Constituency MP Clement Andeleki raised a Point of Order against Katuta.
Katuta, prior to the Point of Order, was talking while pointing at Milupi as she was walking out of the Chamber after being ordered to leave.
When she reached the exit door, she turned and walked back in while pointing in the Speaker’s direction and making utterances before walking out again.
On 29th June, 2023, Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly wrote to Katuta requesting her to state her side of the story.
In her response dated Wednesday, 5th July, 2023, the lawmaker expressed remorse for her conduct and apologised and she further undertook to ensure that such misconduct did not recur.
Meanwhile, in rendering the ruling, the Speaker said the lawmaker’s conduct of walking out of the House in the manner she did was a grave offence, not only against the Member and the Presiding Officer, but the House as a whole.
